Express Entry: Canadian permanent residence for skilled workers
Most Express Entry profiles don't fail on eligibility. They fail on details: the wrong NOC code, a reference letter that doesn't match it, a language test that expires before the ITA. At Star Immigration, a licensed consultant builds your profile around those details from day one, so the invitation, when it comes, turns into a PR approval.
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is the online system IRCC uses to manage permanent residence applications for three federal economic programs. You create a profile, you're ranked with a CRS score, and the highest-ranked candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in regular draws. It's not a program itself; it's the doorway to three.
Points-based ranking
Your CRS score, out of 1,200, ranks you against everyone else in the pool.
No job offer needed
Most invited candidates have no Canadian job offer.
Provinces search the pool
A provincial nomination adds 600 points and almost guarantees an ITA.
Fast processing
Most complete applications are processed within about six months of submission.
Express Entry eligibility: FSW, CEC and FST compared
You must meet the minimum requirements of at least one program to enter the pool. Qualifying for more than one gives you more draws.

How your CRS score is calculated
We calculate your score for you, and for your spouse as principal applicant, because couples often score higher the other way round.
Try the free CRS calculatorHow to improve your CRS score
- Retake your language test. CLB 9 in every ability often adds 50+ points.
- Add French. NCLC 7 adds up to 50 points and opens French draws.
- Test your spouse. Their language and education count.
- Seek a nomination. PNP adds 600 points.
- ECA every credential. Two credentials score higher than one.
Core human capital
Up to 500 points (460 with a spouse) for age, education, first and second official language, and Canadian work experience.
Spouse or partner
Up to 40 points for your partner's education, language and Canadian work.
Skill transferability
Up to 100 points for combinations of education, language and work. CLB 9 is where these double.
Additional points
600 for a nomination, up to 50 for French, up to 30 for Canadian study, 15 for a sibling in Canada. Job offers no longer add points (since March 2025).
Express Entry draws and category-based selection
IRCC invites candidates through general, program-specific (CEC or PNP) and category-based rounds. Categories target French-language proficiency and priority occupations, and are reviewed every year. Each round has its own CRS cut-off.
We check your NOC 2021 code against current categories and the latest cut-offs on IRCC's rounds page before we recommend a strategy. How draws work.
When should you create your profile?
As soon as you meet a program's minimum requirements and have valid language results and an ECA. Ties at the cut-off are broken by the date and time you entered the pool, so waiting can cost you an invitation. Profiles are valid for 12 months and can be re-created.
Express Entry document checklist

Express Entry FAQs
Can I apply for Express Entry without a job offer?
Yes. Most invited candidates have no job offer, and job offers no longer add CRS points.
Which language tests are accepted?
IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada and TCF Canada, valid for two years. Convert your scores to CLB.
My score is below recent cut-offs. Should I still create a profile?
Usually yes. Provinces search the pool and category-based draws can have lower cut-offs.
What happens if I miss the 60-day deadline?
The invitation expires. You can re-enter the pool, but another ITA isn't guaranteed.
Should my spouse be the principal applicant?
Sometimes. We calculate both ways and recommend the stronger option.
How much money do I need for Express Entry?
FSW and FST candidates need settlement funds set by family size, updated each year by IRCC, plus government fees. CEC candidates don't need settlement funds.
